Black Barn Editions is pleased to announce its inaugural publication, Suspended in Time. The book is a collection of stunning ambrotypes by Matthew Larkin whose unique photographs are made on black glass using antique processes. Larkin’s pictures, at once beautiful and haunting, capture arresting moments of individuals engaged in the modern practice of suspension. The act of suspension is a personal one that traces its roots to ancient rituals, and involves hanging from metal hooks inserted under the skin. This book, the first to be dedicated exclusively to the subject of suspension, was designed and produced by the award-winning, New York-based firm Binocular Design. Printed in New England by The Studley Press, all seventy images have been exquisitely reproduced as full-page duotones with a high-gloss, tinted varnish.

Artist and designer Matthew Larkin has embarked in a new direction with Suspended in Time. A founder and principal in the interior design firm, Grant Larkin, he is also an accomplished furniture and lighting designer and topiary artist. His work has appeared in numerous magazines, including Vogue, Vogue Living, and House and Garden, who in 2005 named him one of the “New Tastemakers” for his work in topiary design. Recently, he completed the exterior decoration for the London Hotel in New York City. For the past several years, Larkin has been exploring alternative process photography as an artistic medium, using nineteenth-century equipment and methods. Suspended in Time is the culmination of a two-year artistic project conducted with the collaboration of members of the group Rites of Passage and with the support of the body modification community. It represents Larkin’s first major suite of ambrotype photographs.
